THE HISTORY

Julia's Gulch takes its name from Julia Staney Hughes, a Puyallup-Klickitat tribal member who once lived on a float house below the Gulch. In 2007 the Port of Tacoma, the City of Tacoma and Schnitzer Steel bought the land from Woodworth & Company and implemented a stewardship agreement with the Cascade Land Conservancy (now called ForTerra).  The Gulch, home to over 50 bird species and an important corridor for wildlife, has unfortunately been disturbed by humans and over run by invasive plants.  A group of neighbors calling themselves the Friends of Julia's Gulch have come together to restore this green space.
THE VISION
Our VISION is to restore Julia's Gulch into a healthy habitat by removing invasive plants and replacing them with natives.  This will slow down surface and storm water run-off, improve the quality of water running into Puget Sound and help protect steep slopes from erosion.  At the same time it will provide habitat for animals and birds, educational opportunities and community involvement for our neighbors and the chance for people young and old to enjoy nature.
